PRESS RELEASE
INTRODUCTION OF THE IRI-JI MBAISE FESTIVAL CUP – “MBAISE UNITY CUP”
A FIVE-CLAN TOURNAMENT
Football as a Platform for Unity, Peace, and Cultural Renaissance
The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the Iri-Ji Mbaise Festival 2026 is pleased to announce the introduction of the Iri-Ji Mbaise Festival Cup, to be known as the Mbaise Unity Cup, as one of the major legacy programs of this year’s festival.
The Mbaise Unity Cup is a week-long football championship established to promote peace, unity, friendship, and healthy competition among the people of Mbaise while complementing the cultural significance of the annual Iri-Ji Festival.
Football is a universal language that unites people irrespective of age, political affiliation, religion, or community. It is in recognition of this unique power of sport that the Local Organizing Committee has adopted football as a means of strengthening the bonds of brotherhood among the people of Mbaise.
Participating Clans
The competition will feature representative teams from the five traditional clans of Mbaise:
Agbaja Clan
Ahiara Clan
Ekwerazu Clan
Ezinihitte Clan
Oke Ovoro Clan
Each participating clan will assemble a team comprising talented young footballers who will compete in a spirit of sportsmanship, mutual respect, and communal pride.
Why the Mbaise Unity Cup?
At a time when there is a growing need to reinforce unity and deepen cooperation across our communities, the Mbaise Unity Cup provides an opportunity for our youths to become ambassadors of peace while celebrating the rich cultural heritage that unites us as one people.
The championship is expected to:
Foster unity and reconciliation among the people of Mbaise.
Promote friendship and collaboration among youths.
Discover and showcase football talents within Mbaise.
Encourage healthy lifestyles and positive youth engagement.
Strengthen community participation in the Iri-Ji Mbaise Festival.
Create an atmosphere of excitement leading to the grand cultural celebration.
Promote Mbaise as a destination for culture, sports, tourism, and investment.
More Than Football
“The Mbaise Unity Cup is more than a sporting competition. It is a symbol of our collective resolve to build bridges across communities and clans, and also to demonstrate that our shared heritage is stronger than any differences that may exist among us.” Chimaroke Ben Nnaji, Chairman, Iriji Mbaise Cultural Festival Local Organising Committee, 2026.
As the New Yam Festival celebrates the blessings of harvest, gratitude, and communal living, the Unity Cup reflects those same values through teamwork, discipline, respect, and peaceful coexistence.
Call for Participation
The Local Organizing Committee invites all traditional institutions, community leaders, youth organizations, football clubs, corporate organizations, and well-meaning sons and daughters of Mbaise to support this landmark initiative.
Clans are encouraged to rally behind their teams and participate actively throughout the tournament as we celebrate the enduring spirit of unity that defines the Mbaise people.
Together, let us use sport to strengthen our bonds, celebrate our heritage, and inspire a brighter future for generations to come.
Signed:
Engr Ben C Nnaji
